The Aga Khan University’s Centre for Innovation in Medical Education (CIME) presents SIMPACT 2024 – Region’s first-ever international conference in both Karachi, Pakistan and Nairobi, Kenya dedicated to harnessing the power of simulation-based education for a safer and more skilled healthcare future

Scheduled from May 20th to 21st, 2024, SIMPACT promises to be a dynamic platform for a diverse community of simulation professionals – spanning students, educators, experts, and industry leaders – to come together with a shared mission: advancing patient care and promoting patient safety. With its hybrid format, blending in-person events at the Centre for Innovation in Medical Education (CIME) alongside virtual participation options, SIMPACT ensures global accessibility and inclusivity.

Day 01-The Inaugural Day

The inaugural day of SIMPACT sets the stage for an immersive journey into the world of healthcare simulation. Attendees are greeted with registrations, marking the beginning of a transformative experience. From there, participants can engage in a myriad of preconference workshops held concurrently in Karachi and Nairobi, covering a wide array of healthcare topics. 

These workshops delve into specialties such as: 

  1. Reviving Newborns: Insights and Intervention for Survival
  2. Workshop on Perimortem Caesarean Section
  3. From Theory to Practice: Building Confidence in Pediatric Procedures
  4. Cardiac Simulation Workshop
  5. Workshop on Fidelity and Moulage
  6. Interprofessional Simulation Workshop
  7. Essentials of Laparoscopic Skills
  8. Management of Common Dermatological Disorders in a Primary Care Setup
  9. Code Sepsis: A hands-on approach to save lives
  10. All the briefs: Pre-brief, Debrief and Meta Debrief
  11. Research and Publication: The Essentials

offering hands-on learning experiences facilitated by renowned experts in their respective fields.

Building upon the success of the 2023 Healthcare Simulation Week, SIMPACT introduces a captivating and educational highlight – the Escape Room. Designed by a team of seasoned educators and technical specialists, this simulated challenging environment tests the skillset of healthcare professionals under pressure, fostering critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.

Joint Directors’ Session: Simulation 360

The pinnacle of day one is the Joint Director Session titled “Simulation 360,” offering participants a holistic perspective of simulation-based learning. Led by esteemed directors Dr. Faisal Ismail and Dr. Michael Moneypenny, this hybrid session transcends geographical boundaries, with both directors conducting the workshop simultaneously from Karachi and Nairobi.

As the day draws to a close, participants gather for a dinner and networking event, creating an atmosphere ripe for collaboration and camaraderie. Attendees can explore multiple vendor stalls showcasing cutting-edge simulation technologies. From virtual reality simulators to high-fidelity mannequins, these exhibits offer a glimpse into the future of simulation-based learning, inspiring innovation and sparking conversations about the transformative potential of these advancements in healthcare education.

Day 02

Keynote Address by Dr Robert Armstrong: “Navigating New Frontiers: Simulation-Based Medical Education in Modern Healthcare”

The inaugural session of day 2 led by Dr Robert Armstrong, “Navigating New Frontiers: Simulation-Based Medical Education in Modern Healthcare,” pledges to delve into the latest advancements and strategies shaping contemporary medical education.

Real-life Simulation Experiences from LMIC’s (Hybrid) 

This segment features a number of distinguished speakers, offering firsthand insights from the forefront of healthcare delivery.

Panel Discussion: Building Blocks for Successful Simulation Programs in Healthcare in LMIC

As the day progresses, our attention shifts towards a panel discussion. Titled “Building Blocks for Successful Healthcare Simulation Programs in LMIC,” this dialogue aims to unearth the foundational elements pivotal for driving impactful simulation initiatives, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

Keynote Address by Dr James M. Cooke, M.D. – Title: “Innovation and the Future of Simulation-Based Medical Education”

Further, a dedicated session on “Innovation and the Future of Simulation-Based Medical Education” awaits exploration, offering a glimpse into emerging trends, technologies, and methodologies poised to revolutionize medical education on a global scale.

Abstract Oral and Poster Presentations

One of the most highly anticipated events on the agenda for day 2 is the Abstract Showcase. This showcase serves as a platform to celebrate the scholarly endeavors of our community, where the shortlisted abstracts will be prominently featured, allowing attendees to gain insights into the innovative research and projects being undertaken in the realm of healthcare simulation. It provides an invaluable opportunity for participants to share their findings, exchange ideas, and inspire others in the field. 

Moreover, the Abstract Showcase also serves as a forum for recognizing excellence, with the best oral and poster presentations being distinguished and honored in both Nairobi and Karachi. 

Karachi and Nairobi Simulation Networks Launch by the Aga Khan University’s President and Provost

As the day draws to a close, we eagerly await the unveiling of initiatives in Karachi and Nairobi. The palpable anticipation underscores the pivotal moment as we await the AKU’s President and Provost’s addresses, which promises to chart the course for the future trajectory of our collective endeavors.
