On 27 September 2024 a new simulation centre was inaugurated in Piedmont at the Michele e Pietro Ferrero Hospital in Verduno. The LABSI, realised thanks to the Alba-Bra Hospital Foundation and ASL CN2, represents a centre of excellence for advanced medical training. Equipped with high-tech simulation rooms, the centre allows healthcare professionals to train on complex clinical cases in a safe and controlled environment. The LABSI marks another important step towards improving the quality of care and ensuring patient safety through the use of realistic simulations.
On 27 September 2024, at the Michele and Pietro Ferrero Hospital in Verduno, the official inauguration of the new Advanced Simulation Centre took place, an important achievement in the field of medical training in Piedmont. This innovative centre, called Laboratory of Advanced Simulation (LABSI), represents a virtuous example for the practical and theoretical training of healthcare professionals, with the aim of improving the quality of care and guaranteeing greater safety for patients.
Cutting-edge medical training
Thanks to the generosity of Maria Franca and Giovanni Ferrero and the collaboration between the Alba-Bra Hospital Foundation and ASL CN2, LABSI is the first simulation centre within a non-university public hospital in Piedmont. The facility has been designed to offer doctors and healthcare professionals a unique training experience, with simulated clinical cases reproducing complex clinical situations in a safe and controlled environment.
The centre has state-of-the-art simulation rooms equipped with advanced technology that can be modulated to faithfully recreate environments such as an operating theatre, an emergency room shock room or a delivery room. State-of-the-art simulators allow training on a wide range of clinical cases, improving decision-making skills and timely intervention in emergency situations. One of the key features of LABSI is the ability to record and stream simulation sessions, allowing accurate review of performance and continuous training based on immediate feedback and critical reflection in debriefings.
A cultural project, not just technological
During the inauguration, Dr Luciano Scalise, director of the Alba-Bra Hospital Foundation, emphasised the importance of the cultural change brought about by this project:
This is not just a technological evolution, but a real cultural change in the training of our healthcare personnel, to improve the quality of care offered and ensure patient safety’.
The aim of LABSI is not only to update staff technically, but also to provide an environment that fosters teamwork, critical thinking and adaptation to constantly changing clinical cases.
A training model for the future
‘Simulation is the future of medical training,’ said Dr Paola Malvasio, commissioner of ASL CN2. The project, in fact, stands out for its innovative approach to medical training, placing practical simulation at the centre as a fundamental teaching tool. According to Malvasio, this new training model will not only contribute to improving the health and safety of patients, but also to promoting the development of modern skills among healthcare workers, making the Verduno Hospital a reference point for professional training throughout the region.
Future perspectives
To date, 25 healthcare professionals are involved in defining and preparing the activities of the centre, which will be fully operational from January 2025. It is envisaged that LABSI will become a focal point for the training and continuing education of doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals, helping to create a network of highly qualified professionals prepared to handle the complexities of modern clinical practice.
With this new centre, Piedmont is positioned at the forefront of the field of medical simulation, a growing sector that is transforming the way future health professionals are trained.
